How to Create a Gravatar in 3 Easy Steps

How do you get your avatar to show up on my blog and promote your brand, too? Glad you asked. It’s easy! Oh, and it’s free.

The Act of Branding
My CREATIVEGoddess blog and site is hosted by WordPress. When you see avatars that accompany comments made by people like you, you may see a unique image or you may see a general blue star as a placeholder awaiting your uniqueness. If you’re anything like me, we’re definitely image conscious.

If you see a blue icon next to you name, it’s time to swap it out and get your own gorgeous mugshot in that space! You own it, convert it!

The 3 Steps
Wordpress allows me to automatically import a universal avatar through the third party application called Gravatar. Gravatar stands for Globally Recognized Avatar, which means it can be used all over the web attached to your email. Signing up for a account is FREE, and all that’s required is your email address. Once you’ve signed up you can upload your avatar image and soon after you’ll start seeing it on gravatar enabled sites!

1) Sign Up for the Free Account
2) Upload your image. Here’s how:

a) Within the top nav bar, you’ll see ‘My Account’. Click ‘Manage’
b) Click ‘Add New Image’ (you can click on each screen shot to enlarge it just a bit bigger)

c) Find or create your image.

As you can see, I chose from my harddrive:

d) Scale the cropmarks on your chosen image to reveal your final avatar. Click ‘Crop and Finish’ button.

e) Choose the rating on your avatar.

It’s interesting how it will show you what the image will look like if you choose ‘X’.

f) Your image appears as the most recent selection and confirm.

Patience, grasshopper. Gravatar usually requires 5-10 minutes to get uploaded to their system, but you can now move on to more important things.

3) If you have a WordPress account (which I highly recommend if you’re a creative type), engage your Gravatar through your profile.

a) Go into the top nav to find ‘My Account’ and select ‘Edit Profile’

b) Find ‘My Gravatar’ on the far right and change it to your preferred image. You’re done!

This quick and dirty project is one of those ways that allows you to expose your brand on the smallest of levels. It’s important to note that just because your image is small, doesn’t mean it’s insignificant. We’d love to see how you’ve implemented your Gravatar.

Lisa: Thanks for this! I created my gravatar, but I think that some of these instructions pertain only to accounts. Those of us using have to find a different way to install it on our blog interfaces. I’m looking into it.
